Heritage Roofing in Surrey

Surrey's historic buildings carry centuries of architectural tradition. From Tudor timber frames in the Weald to Georgian estates along the Hog's Back, medieval churches in the Surrey Hills to Victorian villas in Guildford and Reigate, each one demands specialist heritage roofing in Surrey that understands both traditional craftsmanship and the county's building heritage.

Working on Surrey's Heritage Buildings

Two projects demonstrate the range of heritage roofing work Surrey's buildings require.

At Chartwell House, the former home of Sir Winston Churchill on the Kent-Surrey borders, we completed a six-month reroofing project valued at over half a million pounds. We replaced the 1922 tiles with locally produced Keymer handmade clay tiles, maintaining the building's historic character while ensuring long-term weather protection for this National Trust property.

The Manor House in Lingfield presented different challenges. This three-storey, forty-room Elizabethan-style mansion needed extensive restoration across the main house, gatehouse, and outbuildings. Complex swept valleys required careful tile coursing, ridge tiles were formed into distinctive scorpion tail shapes, and traditional leadwork included Code 4 flashings and Code 6 coverings to the cupola. We used lime mortar for chimney repointing and coordinated work carefully as the property remained occupied throughout.

Surrey's Building Character

Surrey's architecture reflects both its geology and its history. The Greensand ridge provided the distinctive ironstone used in churches and manor houses across the Surrey Hills. Guildford's High Street retains its medieval pattern with Georgian and Victorian frontages. Godalming and Farnham developed as wool towns, their prosperity visible in timber-framed cloth halls. The railway transformed Redhill, Woking, and Dorking, bringing Victorian expansion.

Different parts of Surrey have distinct traditions. Properties in the Weald share characteristics with Sussex and Kent, oak framing and Horsham stone on older buildings, clay tiles on later ones. Thames-side towns have brick buildings influenced by London styles. Tile-hung facades appear across the county, a practical weather response that became decorative.

Conservation areas cover much of historic Surrey. Reigate, Dorking, Haslemere, Cranleigh, each town has protected areas where roofing work requires Listed Building Consent. We've worked with conservation officers across Surrey's eleven councils, each with specific requirements but all focused on preserving architectural heritage.

Traditional Roofing Methods for Surrey Properties

Heritage roofing in Surrey means working with the county's traditional materials. We source reclaimed handmade clay tiles that match Surrey's historic roofing, whether plain tiles or the peg tiles common on older properties. Natural slate is selected to suit the building's age and location. Lead roofing follows traditional methods, hand-worked and installed using techniques that remain effective generations later.

Timber repairs use English oak to match original roof structures. We recreate historic details including swept valleys that characterise Surrey's grander buildings, decorative bargeboards and finials, and cast iron rainwater goods that match Victorian or Edwardian originals. Before major work begins, we often conduct drone surveys to assess roof condition without access issues, particularly useful for complex roofs.

Our team holds NFRC certification for heritage slating and tiling, LCA accreditation for leadwork, and we're members of SPAB. We also hold ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 certifications along with CHAS and Constructionline Gold.
