Social Value

Social Value

The idea behind the Social Value act is both simple and compelling. It ultimately encourages contractors delivering works for commissioning authorities to deliver a range of additional outcomes as part of their contract which benefit society. In turn, this secures the best value from the public money being spent.

Social Value principles have been embedded within our business for a number of years.

As a family-run company based in East Sussex for over 70 years, our team possess a detailed understanding of the socioeconomic factors within the region and are well placed to maximise the positive impact on the local community arising from our organisational activities.

We have helped many companies locally including a financial donation to Eastbourne Foodbank and carrying out roofing and general repairs to Mencap’s building in Eastbourne free of charge..

We are delighted to have supported SERV Sussex – the Bloodrunners as one of our main charities. This charity provides night time transportation of blood, blood products and other urgent medical items for NHS Hospitals across Sussex. The service is provided free of charge to the NHS between the hours of 7pm and 6am, 365 days of the year via a committed team of volunteer riders and drivers often using their own vehicles. We are proud to employ one of their volunteers, David Duerdoth, knowing he is on constant standby to rush around the county with emergency supplies.

Other community support has been demonstrated by sponsoring local youth football teams, scout groups, karate teams, SWAG and Eastbourne Cricket Club.

Every year we attend Hailsham Community College to participate in interview days giving students much needed experience before they enter the “real world”. We also attend their annual careers fair, and other similar events locally such as the Big Futures Show, where we highlight the various roles within our industry both outside and inside the office.

Students from local schools are welcomed on work experience weeks where they take part in a full week of activities as well as being included in meetings and networking events which helps develop their interpersonal skills.

We run several CPD events throughout the year for local surveyors and architects to attend covering a variety of topics with guest speakers taking the lead.

As well as helping people in East Sussex into sustainable employment – apprentices are guaranteed an offer of full-time position upon completion of their programme - this also help address industry labour shortages.

We joined the St Wilfrid’s Hospice “Partners” scheme and raised £11,000 for them at our charity golf day in July 2022. We have won several awards from them at their annual Business Awards one for Outstanding Pandemic Support for supplying much-needed PPE as well as a few boxes of chocolates for the hard-working staff and another for our fundraising efforts.
