Case Study
Hendall Manor, Cart Barn

The wonderful Cart Barn is a listed barn situated on the Hendall Manor estate near Uckfield, East Sussex

Our first task was to remove the tiles to reduce weight from the structure. Our Stonemason stabilised the stonework with Helifix ties and re pointed the entire structure in a lime mortar mix.

Internally, the floor level was reduced and a reinforced concrete floor slab introduced. This floor supported a separate timber structure which was fully insulated and not connected to the original structure.

The design by Cowen Architects included an open plan living area with separate bathroom and plant room. Externally, the cladding used was “Shou-Sugi-Ban” charred black timber cladding to ensure the building kept in line with the rural farm setting. A new French drain was laid to the perimeter which connected to the existing surface water drainage system.

The new roof consisted of Keymer handmade clay tiles and conservation rooflights. The ceiling was non-vaulted to allow bats to roost in the roof void area above.

Heating was installed using a wet underfloor system and a new kitchen and bathroom was fitted.

The refurbished barn has provided a valuable and luxurious accommodation to the Hendall Manor Wedding venue.
