Clarke Roofing completed a comprehensive improvement programme at Hatchlands Park, a Georgian National Trust property near Guildford. The project addressed critical water management issues by redesigning the guttering system to handle increased rainfall, modifying falls for better drainage, and upgrading below-ground drainage. Works also included full window refurbishment and redecoration, masonry repointing, and renewal of rainwater goods. The project required close collaboration between Clarke Roofing, the project architect, and National Trust conservation teams to ensure all solutions met technical performance standards while preserving the building's historic character and heritage value.
Hatchlands Park is a Georgian country house built in the 1750s for Admiral Edward Boscawen, set within 400 acres of parkland near Guildford. The estate features historic parkland redesigned by Humphry Repton around 1800, gardens by Gertrude Jekyll from the early 20th century, and interiors by Robert Adam. Today the house contains the Cobbe Collection of keyboard instruments and is regularly open to the public as a National Trust property.
We recently completed a substantial improvement programme at Hatchlands Park, working alongside the National Trust to address several pressing issues with the building's external envelope and drainage. Given the building's historic significance and its role as a publicly accessible heritage site, protecting it from water damage was critical to preserving both the structure and the collections it houses.
The main driver for the project was the existing guttering system, which simply couldn't handle the volume of rainwater the building now faces. We redesigned the system and altered the falls to improve water flow and increase drainage capacity, making sure the changes sat comfortably with the building's historic appearance.
The works also covered full window refurbishment and redecoration, repointing of the masonry, and renewal and repair of all rainwater goods. Below ground, we upgraded the drainage system to give the building proper, reliable water management for years to come.
Given that we were working on a heritage building, the job needed close coordination between ourselves, the project architect, and the National Trust's conservation and estates teams. Every solution had to work technically, meet conservation standards, and be practical to implement without compromising the structure's character.
