Clarke Roofing replaced the pitched roof on the science block at Downlands Community School, Hassocks, completing the work within a six-week summer deadline. The project included installing a new Redland Cambrian Slate roof with full ventilation, Code 5 lead valleys, and upgraded thermal insulation. External works covered new fascias, soffits, and aluminium gutters, while internally the ceiling was replaced and 200mm Rockwool insulation was added to improve energy efficiency. The building was handed over on schedule for the start of term.
Downlands Community School in Hassocks, West Sussex, is a large secondary school with a mix of older and modern buildings. Clarke Roofing was awarded the contract through competitive tender to completely replace the pitched roof on the science block. The project included upgrading the roof's thermal performance and carrying out all necessary internal remedial works.
The entire programme had to be completed within the six-week summer holiday period. This tight deadline meant careful planning was essential, from initial site setup right through to final handover, ensuring the building was ready for students and staff when term started.
Work began with scaffolding installation to give the roofing team safe access and create a secure working area around the science block roof. Before stripping the old roof covering, we disconnected the lightning protection system so the new roofing materials could be installed. The lightning protection was reconnected once the roofing work was finished.
After removing the original covering, we carried out a thorough inspection of the timber roof structure, checking for any defects or deterioration. We addressed any issues found before moving forward, making sure the new roof system would be built on a solid foundation.
The replacement roof consisted of Divoroll Elite 200 2S breathable underlay, new roofing battens, and Redland Cambrian Slate tiles. We also installed ThruVent 4.5k roof slope ventilators, rapid-fit 2-in-1 eaves trays, a new dry verge system, continuous hip system, abutment ventilation pack, and a continuous vented ridge. All work followed Redland's manufacturer specifications. Two Code 5 lead valleys and Code 4 lead abutments were fitted to create a watertight finish.
On the exterior, we removed and replaced the existing fascia, soffits, and rainwater goods. New uPVC fascia boards were fitted as direct replacements, along with a Marley Alutec Traditional Moulded Ogee aluminium gutter system (125 × 100 mm) for better durability and performance.
Inside, the existing ceiling tiles and aluminium grid were taken out and replaced with new ones. We also upgraded the thermal insulation in the roof void, installing 200 mm Rockwool Roll insulation to improve the building's energy efficiency.
