Clarke Roofing completed the restoration of a historic West Cloister walkway where decades of foot traffic had polished the asphalt surface smooth, creating a slip hazard. Working alongside consultant surveyors MacConvilles, we installed the Bauder LiquiPAVE RF system in Quartz, a cold-applied, PMMA-based liquid waterproofing and anti-slip solution that delivered a safe, durable finish while preserving the iconic character of the historic setting.
This historic institution is defined by its iconic Cloisters, which serve as the primary arterial thoroughfares between the main buildings. Over decades of use, the asphalt surface to the West Cloister had become almost polished from foot traffic, and a solution was required to improve slip resistance. The challenge lay in implementing a high-performance, non-slip solution that could endure heavy pedestrian volumes whilst preserving the prestigious, traditional aesthetic of the institution.
The consultant surveyors, MacConvilles, had conducted a site-specific analysis to evaluate the substrate's condition. Clarke Roofing presented three distinct surfacing options, prioritising a "restoration-first" approach. The goal was to achieve a careful balance between modern durability, rapid installation, and visual harmony with the surroundings.
The client ultimately selected the Bauder LiquiPAVE RF system in Quartz, a choice driven by its exceptional safety profile and the high level of slip resistance provided by the quartz aggregate. Engineered specifically for heavy-duty pedestrian environments, the system offers the long-term durability required for a busy walkway, while its fast-curing properties ensured that installation could be completed with minimal disruption to daily operations.
The LiquiPAVE RF system is a high-performance, cold-applied solution designed for longevity and environmental safety, utilising a precise combination of LiquiPAVE R resin and LiquiPAVE F filler. This PMMA-based chemistry incorporates a catalyst to initiate a rapid chemical cure, resulting in a self-levelling waterproofing aggregate bond coat that provides a seamless, robust finish. The system also supports modern sustainability standards, as it is entirely solvent, isocyanate, and halogen-free.
To ensure a flawless bond and a premium finish, our team followed a rigorous installation process that began with deep-cleaning the existing mastic asphalt using high-pressure washers to remove all contaminants and ensure a pristine substrate. Once the surface was prepared, the PMMA resin was mixed with the filler and catalyst, with the proportions carefully tailored to the ambient temperature to provide an optimal curing window. This self-levelling bond coat was then precisely applied to the surface. Finally, while the resin remained tacky, the Quartz aggregate was added to the system, providing the essential non-slip texture required for safety.
The project was completed successfully, transforming the Cloister into a safe, durable environment. The Bauder LiquiPAVE RF system seamlessly integrated with the historic setting, providing a modern safety standard while maintaining the "iconic" look and feel requested by the client. The Cloister is now fully equipped to handle the rigours of daily life for years to come, regardless of the British weather.
